Managed vs Unmanaged VPS: a practical guide

The decisive difference is who performs server work when something changes or breaks.

SSH and access

On a self-managed Droplet, KVM VPS or Cloud Server, you control administrative access: keys, accounts and permissions. A managed platform may provide application-level SSH without root access; Cloudways explicitly restricts root access. Check whether your deployment needs system packages or custom services before choosing a platform.

Updates and security

On a self-managed plan, you handle the guest operating system and application updates. A managed service may patch the server layer, while application code, plugins and stored data can remain your responsibility. Ask exactly which updates are included and who schedules them.

Firewall

With a self-managed server, you decide which ports are open and configure the provider or guest firewall. Managed hosting may include firewall controls, but its rules and available customization depend on the offer. Confirm access for SSH, web traffic and any private services.

Backups and recovery

A backup feature is not a tested recovery plan. On a self-managed VPS, choose the backup or snapshot option, check retention and rehearse a restore. Hostinger provides backup controls, DigitalOcean offers optional Droplet backups, and Hetzner describes an optional daily Cloud backup. A managed platform can provide automated backups; confirm schedule, storage charges and what you must do to restore.

Monitoring

Hetzner says it monitors the physical host while the customer monitors the VM. The same practical distinction matters elsewhere: host health does not tell you whether a website, queue or database is working. Decide who receives alerts and who diagnoses the application.

Incidents

If physical infrastructure fails, contact the provider. If a deployment breaks the site, a database fills its disk or access is compromised, the person responsible for the guest OS and app must investigate. Managed support may help with specified server tasks; read the support boundary and escalation path before an incident.

Two practical choices

A custom API requiring root-level packages may fit a self-managed Cloud VPS when the team can maintain it. A standard website with no server operator may fit managed hosting after checking its supported stack and exact coverage. A budget VPS can lower the published entry price for a lab, but it does not remove administration.

Compare cash and time

List the provider bill, optional services and your estimated administration hours separately. Our managed versus unmanaged cost calculator treats time as your assumption, not a provider charge. No category here is a quality score.
